# Data Templates

### What it is

A data template saves the *what and how* of an export — its matching status, tags, and file format — so you can reuse it instead of setting things up each time. A data template carries no schedule and no recipients.

### How to create a template

You can create a data template from three places — all produce the same reusable template in your list.

**From the Companies listing**

1. On the Companies listing, click **Export**, then select **Use an existing data template**.
2. Click **+ Add a data template**.
3. In the **Add data template** dialog, enter a **Template name**, choose a **Matching status** and **File format**, and optionally add **Tags**.
4. Click **Save data template**.

**From the Data Templates tab**

1. Go to the **Data Templates** tab in Export Management and add a new data template.
2. Fill in the same **Add data template** dialog — Template name, Matching status, File format, and optional Tags.
3. Click **Save data template**.

**After running an export (save your current settings)**

When you run an export with filters applied, a **Save as a data template?** prompt appears, offering to save that configuration so you can run it again later without re-selecting the filters and format.

1. Click **Save as data template** (or **Not now** to skip).
2. Give it a **Template name** and save.

However you create it, the template appears in your list and becomes available under **Use an existing data template** on the Companies **Export** menu.

### How to use one

* On the **Data Templates** tab, each data template shows its name, format, scope, and tags. You can search the list.
* Starting an export from a template pre-fills its matching status, tags, and format — the format options stay hidden because the template already includes it.

### Good to know

* You can't save a template without a **name** — the Save button stays disabled until you enter one.
* If the name already exists, you're asked to overwrite it or pick a different name.
* Saving with **no tags** is fine — it's stored as "no tag filter," not treated as an error.
* A template used by a [**scheduled export**](/verifiers/bulk-delivery/export-management/scheduled-exports.md) can't be deleted until that schedule is changed or removed.
